Slam at Juna's 3-2-07

We had the coolest open mic - first, James kicked one, James the hippie who engineered the drum circle domes at Grassroots, the Musefest, and elsewhere. Then a little girl came up with her mother and did a sweet piece. Patrick blew Juna's into the 21st century with his "nine" poem. That guy is so good it scares me, scares me that Russell Simmons is going to hear about him and snatch him away from us. Also delivering strong poetry were Richard Bernstein, who organizes the slam at Colorscape in Norwich, and Emily Vogel who runs a poetry event on the second Friday of the month at the Coffee Connection in Norwich. (I'm featuring there on Friday 3-9-07.) Carla Marks read too. And me, Andy, I read the acknowledgements to my new chapbook, "Call Girl of the Wild." I'll send that chapbook to anyone who makes a $5 contribution to the slamtractor team.

Then the slam. Lindy, aka Twinkle, sacrificed. Mina emceed. Lindy kept score too. I went first, doing "Mumia," then Emily, Gabriel, Patrick, Richard, and Comrade Antaeus. Gabriel won the first round, Comrade Antaeus came in second, then Richard. I won the second round with "She Wants Peace," Gabriel came in second, then Emily. Gabriel won the $18, Comrade Antaeus came in second, winning $9, then Richard, then Emily. So Gabriel, Comrdae Antaeus, and Emily qualified for the semi-final, since Richard has already qualified. After the slam, one last poet came up and read.

So, it was another wonderful night at Juna's. Some of my friends came by, including Melissa, Heidi, and Jeni.
